Chapter 66

Aunt Martha Cooper discreetly tugged at her husband's sleeve and whispered, "That's Iris's younger sister, Luna White. She's extraordinary—just got accepted into medical school this year and is already a miracle worker. William, who'd been paralyzed for over a decade, started walking after just one of her acupuncture treatments."

David Moore didn't even glance up, skepticism dripping from his thoughts. How skilled could some young girl really be? "Iris," he said dismissively, "take your sister to the other room. We've got grown-up matters to discuss here." He waved them off, assuming they were just poor relatives looking for a place to stay.

The Cooper brothers—one paralyzed for years, the other orphaned—had long relied on Aunt Martha's support. David kept his annoyance hidden, but he'd had enough of these so-called burdens.

Iris obediently led Luna to the adjacent room. Aunt Martha brought two thin quilts; the space was tidy and clearly belonged to a young woman—books lined the shelves, and a vase of vibrant plastic flowers brightened the desk.

Once the sisters were settled, Aunt Martha returned to find David shrugging on his coat. "Where are you going at this hour?" she asked, puzzled.

"Give me five dollars, quick!" he barked. "Factory Manager Green's brother-in-law is running a high fever with nosebleeds. The hospital's already issued a critical condition notice—he's the Wang family's only heir!"

As she fumbled with the lockbox, Aunt Martha fretted, "I've met that boy—polite and well-mannered. The Wangs are influential in the provincial capital. How will they handle this...?"

"Exactly!" David stuffed the money into his pocket. "A healthy young man in his twenties, just like that. The Wangs are on their way—I need to go now."

Aunt Martha suddenly grabbed his arm. "Wait! What about Luna? She’s got real medical talent. Why not take her?"

"Are you insane?" He shook her off. "Some country girl playing doctor? We’d be inviting trouble!"

"You have no idea!" She stamped her foot. "William walked after one treatment—one! The hospital’s given up anyway. What’s there to lose?"

David’s eyes widened. "William’s really walking? You’d better not be lying."

"Would I make that up?" She squared her shoulders. "Go see for yourself if you don’t believe me! That girl must have secret family techniques—how else would she get into medical school?"

David stroked his chin, wheels turning. If Luna could save the Wang heir... his position at the factory might just... He slapped his thigh. "Fine! I’ll take her to the hospital!"
