Chapter 223
Luna White pushed the door open and waved at Andrew Smith. "Come in quick, it's freezing outside."
A rush of warm air instantly dispelled the chill. The heating in the expert's building was impressively efficient—the entire room was cozy and warm, a stark contrast to the subzero temperatures outside.
"Much better in here," Luna sighed as she unwrapped her scarf. The northern winter was far colder than anything she'd experienced back home.
Andrew carried several bags into the kitchen, his lips quirking at the spotless stove. "Looks like Dr. White doesn't cook much."
"Of course not. The cafeteria's convenient enough." Luna shrugged off her coat, revealing a fitted beige turtleneck sweater. Having been reborn, she refused to settle for less. With her current salary and bonuses totaling over 150 yuan a month—a considerable income in 1985—she could afford to dress well. She ran her fingers over the sweater's fabric with satisfaction. It was the latest style from the department store.
"Today, I'll show you what I can do," she declared, rolling up her sleeves as she entered the kitchen.
Andrew was unpacking groceries when Luna swiftly washed her hands and grabbed a knife to slice meat.
"Andrew, help me tie this apron," she said, nodding toward the floral-patterned one hanging on the wall. "It's been so long since I cooked, I forgot about it."
Andrew stepped behind her, his arms encircling her waist. The position was almost like an embrace, sending a warm thrill through him. His deft fingers tied the apron strings, deliberately lingering for an extra second.
"Done."
Unaware, Luna cheerfully announced, "Today's menu is boiled sliced pork, stir-fried shredded potatoes, millet porridge, and steamed buns. How's that?"
"I'll eat anything you make," Andrew replied, already rinsing rice for the porridge.
Luna shot him a sidelong glance. "Since when did Captain Smith become so smooth?"
"Just stating facts." His deadpan expression made her laugh.
Once the porridge was on the stove, Luna nudged him. "Go watch TV in the living room. I've got this."
"I'll be your assistant," Andrew said, rolling up his sleeves to wash vegetables. "The evening news isn't half as interesting as watching you cook."
As she chopped meat, Luna asked curiously, "Andrew, your father's a high-ranking official, right? How come you don’t act like a typical privileged kid?"
Andrew efficiently rinsed cabbage leaves. "Are privileged kids not human? I’ve been in the military for years—I’m used to doing things myself. Besides—" He winked at her. "A man who can cook is attractive, isn’t he?"
Luna burst out laughing. "Is Captain Smith complimenting himself now?"
"Just stating facts," he repeated, making her laugh harder.
After washing the cabbage, Andrew filled a basin with warm water. "Girls shouldn’t handle cold water." He carefully tested the temperature before handing it to her.
Touched, Luna suddenly leaned in and kissed his stubbled chin. The rough texture tickled her lips, but before she could gloat, she found herself pinned against the door.
"A-Andrew..." Her voice trembled.
One of his hands cuffed her wrists above her head while the other claimed her lips in a deep, urgent kiss that left her legs weak.
"Still feeling playful?" His breathing was steady, as if the passionate moment hadn’t affected him at all.
Blushing, Luna shook her head. This time, the flirt had definitely been outplayed.
