Chapter 348
Luna White was packing her suitcase.
The humid southern climate forced her to reorganize her belongings. She carefully folded her heavy winter clothes into cardboard boxes, leaving only a few lightweight summer outfits. Her acupuncture kit and essential medicines were placed prominently, followed by two packets of brown sugar and a box of chocolates.
"These will probably melt into a sticky mess," she muttered, yet stubbornly shoved them into her backpack.
When her fingers brushed against the thick stack of cash tucked inside, she couldn't help but smile. Her eldest sister always made sure she'd never face hardship away from home.
Just as she zipped up the backpack, the phone rang.
"Dr. White, no need to purchase your own ticket," came Director Sandra Miller's voice through the receiver. "We're departing with other medical personnel. Someone will meet us upon arrival."
Hanging up, Luna exhaled in relief. She was about to call Andrew when the phone rang again.
"Andrew?" She grabbed the receiver eagerly.
Amidst chaotic assembly whistles in the background, Andrew's voice sounded unusually rushed: "Luna, I've been deployed."
Her heart plummeted. "What mission? Why so sudden?"
"I might be unreachable for months." He paused, his tone turning gravely serious. "Luna, if... if I don't make it back—"
"Don't you dare!" Her voice cracked with panic.
"Just in case," he said with unprecedented heaviness. "Take care of yourself. Find someone good—"
"Andrew Smith!" she nearly shouted.
"Fall in!" came a distant command before Andrew hurriedly said, "Luna, I love you. Meeting you was the best thing that ever happened to me."
"Wait! Listen to me—"
The line went dead, leaving only hollow dial tones.
Luna's hand trembled around the receiver. What kind of perilous mission would make Andrew speak like this?
A sudden realization drained the color from her face. Could they possibly be heading to the same place?
"That fool..." She bit her lip, whispering, "We really are made for each other."
