Chapter 300
Shang Feng's face was dark with fury. His worthless son seemed incapable of staying out of trouble. While in the capital, he had at least shown some restraint, but the moment he stepped outside, he became as wild as an untamed stallion. And now, he had provoked Jiang Shaoqing of all people. Could the mess he created be any worse?
He had only this one son—sometimes he wished he only had daughters. Look at how sensible Xiao Wen was, managing all the household affairs with ease. But this son of his? The difference between them was like night and day.
Yet, what could he do? His mother had fainted from crying, his father had nearly suffered a heart attack, and his wife was drowning in tears. As a father, he didn’t even have the right to discipline his own son.
Shang Kaijie had been spoiled rotten by the entire family. And now, he had the audacity to attempt murder—and was caught red-handed. If it had been an ordinary person, they might have been able to smooth things over with money. But of all people, it had to be the Jiang family’s lifesaver. Old Man Jiang was notoriously protective of his own. This matter wouldn’t be resolved easily.
As he entered the reception room, his assistant respectfully guided him in. Jiang Shaoqing was lounging leisurely on the sofa and only rose slowly when they entered.
"Uncle Shang, please have a seat."
Shang Kaiwen immediately stepped forward. "Brother Jiang, it’s been a while. I apologize on behalf of Xiao Jie for the trouble he’s caused you." She played the emotional card wisely, hoping to minimize the damage.
Shang Feng forced a smile. "Yes, this boy is young and impulsive. He doesn’t think before he acts. I’ll make sure he apologizes to the doctor personally and guarantees it won’t happen again." Sitting on the sofa, he felt uneasy. Facing someone younger than him shouldn’t have made him feel so on edge, yet here he was, restless as if sitting on pins and needles.
Jiang Shaoqing gestured for his assistant to serve tea. "Uncle, Xiao Wen, please have some tea."
When Jiang Shaoqing didn’t respond to their overtures, Shang Feng’s heart sank. Despite his youth, Jiang Shaoqing had inherited his grandfather’s shrewdness and was notoriously difficult to deal with in business. Today’s negotiation wouldn’t be easy.
Shang Kaiwen took a sip of tea, showing no sign of discomfort. "Brother Jiang, where is the injured doctor? I’d like to apologize in person. Whatever conditions you have, we’ll agree to them." If Jiang Shaoqing wouldn’t budge, she’d find another way.
"Unfortunately, she just left." Jiang Shaoqing raised an eyebrow. "You didn’t run into her?" Trying to catch him off guard? This father-daughter pair had arrived half an hour early—he knew exactly what they were plotting.
"Were those two just now Dr. White?" Shang Kaiwen feigned surprise. Internally, she was shocked. That girl looked no older than seventeen or eighteen. How could she be a doctor? The man protecting her also looked familiar, but she couldn’t place him.
"Dr. White is the second daughter-in-law of the Smith family. Andrew Smith escorted her home." Jiang Shaoqing casually dragged the Smiths into the matter. "At this late hour, only someone like me, burdened with responsibilities, would still be entertaining you."
Shang Feng nearly choked on his own breath. How had the Smiths gotten involved? He wasn’t very familiar with Andrew Smith—after moving out of the compound years ago, he’d lost touch with many old acquaintances.
"I see." Shang Kaiwen quickly played the nostalgia card. "Brother Andrew took care of me often when we were kids. Brother Jiang, considering we grew up together—"
"This is complicated." Jiang Shaoqing cut her off. "Last night’s car accident nearly cost Dr. White her life, and there were multiple victims. The circumstances are extremely severe."
Shang Feng couldn’t help but interject. "There’s no proof that Xiao Jie was involved. It could’ve just been a drunk driver—"
Jiang Shaoqing crossed his legs leisurely and took a sip of tea. Getting nervous? Thinking there were no witnesses? They underestimated him.
"General Liam Turner and Colonel Han Weiguo were both present last night. The investigation results were personally relayed to me by General Turner." He spoke slowly. "We initially just wanted an apology from Shang Kaijie, but instead, he escalated things by sending men to attack Dr. White’s sister’s home. Had we arrived a moment later, three lives would’ve been lost."
His gaze turned icy. "Think carefully—if something had actually happened, what do you think the Smiths, General Turner, and our Jiang family would have done?"
This was nothing short of a blatant threat.
