Chapter 115
Luna White's fingers twisted together until her knuckles turned white. The old woman's move was ruthless—forcing her to abandon her own flesh and blood. How could she choose between her children?
"Mom..." Ethan Jackson suddenly released his grandmother's sleeve and pulled his younger brother back. "We'll stay with the Lewises. You take the money to treat Samuel." The boy's voice trembled but held firm.
Luna's heart clenched, tears threatening to spill. These foolish children were making the impossible choice for her.
Nearby, Luna's sister nodded approvingly. Her nephews were thoughtful, understanding their mother's pain. She stepped forward and linked arms with Luna. "They're right. Teenage boys belong with their father. Darren Lewis won't let his own sons starve. Besides, in a few years, they'll need dowries—that's no small expense—"
"Bullshit!" Darren Lewis sprang up, jabbing a finger at his sons. "Take these burdens and get out! I can barely feed myself—how am I supposed to provide for them?"
Luna's sister shot the boys a meaningful glance. Aaron Jackson hesitated, then caught on. He grabbed his brother and threw himself at Darren's feet.
"Dad! We can't leave!" The brothers clung to Darren's legs, wailing. "With Mom, we'll be beggars! Grandma's house is dirt-poor, and Aunt Luna depends on charity!"
Darren kicked them away in irritation. "Scram! Who needs you for support? Go with your cursed mother!"
Luna hurried to help her sons up, tears finally falling. "Come with me, my darlings. Even if we have to beg, I won't abandon you."
Old Mrs. Lewis sighed. She'd hoped to keep two strong laborers, but Luna's sister had a point. She knew her son's worth—he couldn't even care for himself, let alone two growing boys.
"Mrs. Lewis," Luna's sister interjected smoothly, "if you won't take the children, at least provide child support. Raising three alone—"
"No money!" Darren bellowed. "Look at this shack—where would I get any?"
Luna tugged her sister's sleeve. "Let it go. Just being able to take them is enough."
Simon Liu, witnessing this, began drafting an agreement. Luna's sister scanned it, her heart aching. After decades of labor for the Lewises, this was her sister's reward.
When the documents were signed, Luna gathered her three sons in a fierce embrace. From this day forward, the four of them would answer to no one.
