Chapter 391
"What's the White family up to now?" Mayor George Clark scratched his head in frustration.
Ever since becoming the village mayor, he'd been constantly dealing with the Whites' drama. Their household caused more commotion than the village loudspeaker.
"Mayor! Jack White's son-in-law just showed up with a gang!" Neighbor Walter panted as he ran over. "They're saying Maya White cracked her husband's skull, stole his money, and ran off. Now they're here looking for trouble!"
Walter groaned inwardly. Of all the houses, why did his have to share a crumbling wall with the Whites? If a fight broke out, his property would be the first casualty.
George sighed. "Since when did Maya have that kind of guts?"
Couldn't the Whites go one week without causing a scene? While other families were figuring out how to prosper, this household specialized in chaos.
But as mayor, he had no choice.
The moment he reached the White residence, shouting erupted from inside. Villagers formed three concentric circles of spectators who quickly parted when they saw him.
"Mayor! You must help us!" Clara White lunged at him, her greasy hair flying and body reeking of sour sweat. "Frank Harris is bullying our Six Paths Village! My daughter's life is in danger because of him!"
George sidestepped just in time, nearly gagging at the stench.
When had Clara become this filthy? Stains covered her clothes, her hair resembled a bird's nest—she looked like a beggar.
"Speak properly. No need for physical contact." He covered his nose and took two steps back.
Clara stumbled forward, barely catching herself. After a stunned pause, her face flushed crimson.
He was disgusted by her!
Rage simmered in her chest. If that old hag hadn't forced her to live by the pigpen, would she be in this state? The family's debts meant they couldn't even afford soap. She worked dawn till dusk without a hot meal.
She'd thought having a daughter-in-law would ease her burdens. But Lisa Wilson was lazier than her, ordering her around while flaunting her pregnancy. Ethan White, that ungrateful son, doted on his wife and ignored his own mother.
Worst of all was Jack White—he wouldn't even look at her anymore. Who was she supposed to dress up for?
