Chapter 412
"Can't you just let it go? Is he still your son? He's mixed up with that kind of woman, and you still care about him? All he thinks about is her—when was the last time he remembered his own parents?" Walter Wallace slammed the table, furious that his wife had suddenly decided to run off to the city.
Eleanor stomped her foot in frustration. "You can disown him if you want—I won't!"
She rummaged through the drawers, swiftly packing a bundle of clothes. It was clear she had made up her mind.
"Have you lost your mind? Didn’t I tell you? Let Nathaniel suffer out there! Only then will he realize how hard life is and who truly cares for him! Or do you actually want him to spend his life with that divorced woman, raising another man’s child?"
"Enough of your nonsense! The mayor got a call from Nathaniel today." She ignored him, counting the bills she’d tucked away in her handkerchief.
"What did he call for? Couldn’t make it on his own?" A smug grin crept onto Walter’s face. If his son had failed, he’d love to see how that couple would handle it.
"Ha! They’re doing just fine!" Eleanor scoffed. "The mayor said Nathaniel owns two restaurants now and plans to open two more this year! Your little scheme will never work!"
After decades of marriage, she knew exactly what her husband was plotting.
Walter’s face darkened.
"If he’s doing so well, why bother calling?" What infuriated him even more was that their son always contacted the mayor—never his own parents.
"Luna’s pregnant! Our boy’s going to be a father! How can I not go take care of my daughter-in-law and grandchild?" She tightened the knot on her bundle.
"What? She’s pregnant?" Walter felt as if he’d been struck by lightning.
He had clung to the hope that Nathaniel would come to his senses and leave Luna.
But now there was a baby on the way! Once that child was born, how could Nathaniel ever walk away?
This meant he’d lost his son for good!
"Yes, she’s pregnant! This is Nathaniel’s first child—boy or girl, how could I, as their grandmother, not be there? When our other daughters-in-law gave birth, didn’t I take care of them during their confinement? Why shouldn’t I go for Nathaniel?"
Eleanor had long hoped for her son to settle down and start a family. She wasn’t thrilled about him marrying a divorced woman—what mother would be?
But what’s done is done, and now there’s a grandchild. How could she pretend not to know?
If her husband wanted to disown their son, fine—but she wouldn’t!
"You’re not going! If I don’t acknowledge them, neither will you!" Walter roared.
Eleanor planted her hands on her hips and glared. "I’m going anyway! What are you going to do about it?"
The tension between them crackled like gunpowder in the air.
