Chapter 194
"Director, I just want to focus on being a good doctor. Nothing else matters to me," Luna White set down her chopsticks, her gaze clear and sincere.
Director Thompson placed a piece of braised pork on her plate. "I can see that. You have the compassion that defines a true healer."
The scene of Luna saving a patient in the hallway earlier had not only moved Director Thompson but also touched every doctor in the hospital. Her selfless dedication to saving lives struck a chord deep within everyone.
"If you keep praising me, I won’t be able to finish this meal," Luna teased with a smile. Since her reincarnation, this was the first time she had felt such paternal warmth, and it brought a quiet comfort to her heart.
Andrew Smith silently ladled a bowl of soup for her.
"Alright, I’ll stop. But you need to eat more. Every time you perform acupuncture, it looks like it takes half your life," Director Thompson said, his eyes filled with concern as he studied her thin face. "If there’s anything special you’d like from the cafeteria, just let me know. I’ll have the chef prepare it for you."
Luna playfully blinked. "Then I’d better eat my fill now, or I might get scolded for having a big appetite when I marry into the family later."
Andrew remained expressionless but added another piece of fish to her plate.
"Luna, where are you from? Do you have any family left?" Director Thompson suddenly asked, his gaze thoughtful.
"Six Paths Village. My parents are gone. Just my older brother and sister remain," Luna answered frankly.
"Were your parents doctors too?"
"Yes, rural physicians," Luna replied smoothly, weaving her story. "Our family’s acupuncture technique requires innate talent. It might skip a dozen generations before finding a successor. My father said I was lucky—I practiced on them since I was little. I’ve probably broken enough needles to fill a basket."
Director Thompson paused mid-bite. "Six Paths Village? What was your mother’s name?"
"Mary White." Luna noticed the subtle shift in the director’s expression.
Just as the atmosphere grew tense, Chief Xing rushed in, flustered. "Director, we have a problem! Dr. Collins’ mother-in-law is causing a scene in the outpatient hall. The old woman is lying on the floor!"
"What happened?" Director Thompson stood immediately.
"She’s accusing Dr. Collins of not giving her living expenses. The crowd has blocked the entire hall!"
Luna’s heart skipped a beat—Lily Collins?
"I’ll handle it." Director Thompson strode out.
Andrew caught Luna’s arm as she moved to follow. "Stay out of trouble. Why don’t you show me your dorm instead?"
"It’s almost time for my shift," Luna glanced at her watch. "When do you report back to base?"
Andrew’s eyes lingered on the watch at her wrist, a faint smile in his gaze. "Give me your number. I’ll call ahead next time."
They exchanged contact information. Luna noticed his handwriting—strong and precise—and raised an eyebrow. "You’re well-educated?"
"High school graduate." He checked his watch. "I should go."
After seeing Andrew off, Luna turned and sprinted toward the outpatient hall. She had to see what was happening with Lily. After all, that "terrible idea" had come from her.
